Born Henri-Edmond Delacroix in Douai, northern France, he later adopted the name “Cross” to distinguish himself from Eugène Delacroix. After studying in Lille and Paris, he became associated with the Neo-Impressionist circle, including Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. From the late 1880s onward, he developed a style based on divided brushstrokes and optical color theory. In the early 1890s, Cross moved to the south of France and settled in Saint-Clair on the Mediterranean coast. The light and landscape of the region became central subjects in his work. He also traveled to Italy and Venice, producing numerous paintings of coastal scenes, gardens, and urban views. Over time, his brushwork broadened and his compositions became more clearly structured. Cross remained active until his death in Saint-Clair in 1910.About This BookThis volume presents a selection of Cross’s representative works arranged in chronological order. From his early darker-toned paintings to his Mediterranean landscapes and later compositions with structured color areas, the book allows readers to follow the development of his career.
